While it would not be surprising or out of place for a male Dom to wear a corset, it is usually a female item and we will assume that the Dominant wearer is female.
A corset can give power to a Domme in a few ways; it can make her more confident, it can give her an air of the untouchable, add to her mystique, and to her prowess generally by making her irresistibly sexy.
Corsets make people feel more in control of themselves, and as a Domme this makes you more in control of your sub or slave. When you are in control you are more assertive, you can make your sub feel more comfortable with your dominance and they will feel safer and more protected.
In a corset a Domme becomes untouchable; the corset is a barrier to any sub who is allowed to touch the Domme. It becomes a symbol of her higher status, especially if the sub is naked or in a humiliating costume.
A corset also makes a Domme look more aloof, and thus on a higher plane than her sub.
Corsets accentuate the female form, and in doing so the Domme's body becomes a temple to worship; it adds to her appeal as a sexual being who the sub has to satisfy, all the while knowing full well that the Domme is above him.
Corsets in the submissive/slave role
As a sub corsets can be used as a form of bondage. Corsets can be worn as a symbol of your submission, as a symbol of ownership, or simply as a sign that you are in the play space.
Some Dom/mes will require that their subs or slaves start tightlacing (corset training) to please them as a form of constant bondage and also an on-going reminder of their Dominant's ownership.
In a play scenario, Dominants may put a sub into a corset to introduce a subtle amount of pain or discomfort from having the corset laced very tight. They may also lace it tight enough to be a form of breath play (although it is not recommended that corsets be laced this tightly for extended periods of time).
Many Dominants whose male submissives are into forced feminization, cross-dressing, or sissy play may want the sub to wear a corset to induce a more feminine figure, thus adding to the fantasy.
On the other hand, corsets can be used as humiliation for the sub who is not into cross dressing, to make them feel dominated by changing their gender identity.
As an extension, the male slave may be required to wear a corset under their normal clothes as a subtle reminder of their slave status and a reminder of their gender play or sissy role.
It has also been suggested that corsets make it easier to involve a sub in serious bondage, as they can be made with a D-ring or other attachments to allow for easy attachment or bondage. Thus the corset can be used as an immobilization tool, and bondage accessory.
